Before you sell a candle, you have to know it will burn the way it should across its whole life — not just the first hour, and not just the sample that happened to behave. Why you burn-test at all

You burn-test to catch failures before a customer does. A wick that tunnels leaves half the wax unburned and wastes what the buyer paid for. A wick that runs too hot throws a tall, sooty flame and can heat the vessel to a temperature that cracks glass. A wick that leans can put the flame against the side of the container. Any of these is a bad review at best and a fire at worst, and none of them are visible in an unlit candle sitting on a shelf.

Testing is also the only honest way to choose a wick. The right wick depends on the wax, the fragrance load, the vessel diameter, and even the dye — change any one and the burn changes. There is no chart that skips the test. You start from the wick manufacturer’s size recommendation for your wax and vessel, then you make real test candles at your actual fragrance percentage and burn them.

The reference points: ASTM F2417

The candle industry’s fire-safety benchmark is ASTM F2417, the Standard Specification for Fire Safety for Candles (updated in 2023/2024). It’s the target your testing is aiming at. Its reference points are the ones to hold your candle against (per ASTM F2417):

  • Flame height. The flame should stay no taller than about 3 inches (76 mm). A flame consistently above that is a sign the wick is oversized for the vessel.
  • The container survives. The vessel should not crack or break during burning. Glass that fractures from heat is an immediate hazard.
  • The wick stays put. The wick should not migrate or lean so far that the flame contacts the container for more than a few seconds.
  • It stays upright. A candle should remain stable and upright even on a 10-degree incline, because real surfaces aren’t perfectly level.

Meeting these isn’t a certificate you issue — it’s the bar your own testing confirms your candle clears. Treat F2417 as the definition of “burns safely,” and let it tell you when a wick-and-vessel combination has failed.

A repeatable test routine

Consistency is the whole point, so run every test the same way and write down what you see. Here’s a routine you can repeat for any wick-and-vessel combination (per the National Candle Association fire-safety rules):

  1. Set up clean. Use a fresh test candle made at your real fragrance load, cured for the time your wax needs. Test on a heat-safe surface, away from drafts, vents, and anything flammable, and never leave it unattended.
  2. Trim the wick. Trim it to about 1/4 inch before lighting. A long wick throws a tall flame and skews the whole test.
  3. Time the burn by diameter. Burn about one hour for every inch of the container’s diameter — so a 3-inch-wide jar gets roughly a three-hour burn. This is a “power burn” that lets the melt pool develop fully.
  4. Watch the melt pool. By the end of the burn window, the melted wax should reach the edges of the container. If it never does, the wick is undersized and the candle will tunnel. If the pool forms fast and the vessel gets uncomfortably hot, the wick is likely oversized.
  5. Watch the flame and wick. The flame should stay controlled and roughly within the F2417 height reference, not tall and dancing. The wick shouldn’t lean into the glass, and it shouldn’t build a big carbon “mushroom” that makes it soot.
  6. Go the full distance. Test across a complete burn down the candle, not just the first few hours. Problems like overheating and leaning often only show up in the bottom third.
  7. Log it. Record the wax, fragrance, load percentage, wick, vessel, cure time, and exactly what you observed. That log is what makes the result reproducible.

Change one variable at a time. If a burn fails, adjust a single thing — wick size, fragrance load, or vessel — and test again. Change two at once and you’ll never know which one fixed it.

Reading the failures

Two failure modes cover most of what you’ll see. Tunneling — the melt pool never reaches the edge and wax builds up on the walls — means the wick is too small for the vessel; size up. A tall, sooty, flickering flame, black marks on the glass, or a vessel too hot to touch means the wick is too large; size down. Between those, you’re hunting for the wick that reaches the edge cleanly, holds a calm flame, and keeps the vessel warm rather than scorching. Expect to test several wick sizes before one lands.

Because the result belongs to a specific combination of materials, it’s worth tying your burn-test notes to the batch they came from.
