The second time, if you cannot make the same one again, it turns out you did not make a product. You got lucky once. The whole difference between a lucky batch and a repeatable product is the record you kept while you made it. Why the same product has to come out the same
Consistency is not a nicety. It is the thing your whole business quietly rests on.
A repeat customer buys again because they expect exactly what they got last time: the same burn, the same glaze color, the same crumb, the same fit. A stockist reorders because they need the same product on their shelf every month; a shop cannot sell a bar, a mug, or a loaf that is subtly different each time, and will drop a maker who cannot deliver the same thing twice. Even for your own sanity, consistency is what lets you price a product, photograph it once, and trust that what you ship matches the listing.
You cannot hold all of that in your head past a handful of batches. Recipes drift. You round a measurement, swap a component “just this once,” or change vessels, suppliers, or settings and forget you did. A batch record is how the product stays the same while your memory does not.
What a batch record captures
A batch record is a short, dated log of how you made one specific batch. It does not need to be elaborate; it needs to be complete enough to rebuild the batch from scratch. At minimum, capture:
- A batch number and the date.
- The product, and the version of the recipe or the file you worked from.
- Each material with its quantity, and the vendor and lot it came from.
- The key ratio your craft turns on. Every craft has one number that decides whether the batch is right: a candle’s fragrance load, a soap’s lye concentration and superfat, the proportions in a glaze recipe, a dough’s hydration, a print’s infill and wall count, the alloy and solder you set a stone with, the power and speed of a cut.
- The process variables you could change without noticing. Melt and pour temperatures, cure time, proof and bake times, the firing schedule, nozzle and bed temperatures, feed rate and number of passes. These are the settings that walk when you are tired or in a hurry, and they are the first thing you will want to compare against when a batch comes out wrong.
- The number of units the batch produced — its yield — and the ones that did not survive to sellable.
- The test or inspection the batch has to pass. A burn test, a pH check on a cured bar, a taste and crumb check on the first one out of the oven, a fit check on a print, a test tile from the same glaze bucket, a scrap piece run at the same settings before you cut the real blank.
